Before and After: Multiple Bathroom Remodels in a Portland Home

With a great home in an ideal location, it was time for multiple bathroom remodels in this 2000 home in the Northwest Heights area of Portland. The family has been in the home for 18 years and has already renovated the kitchen, which left the bathrooms looking even more outdated. When it was time to renovate five bathrooms in the house, the homeowners called the Mountainwood Homes team to guide them through the process. To touch more rooms while adhering to a budget, the homeowners decided to keep the existing bathroom layouts, vanity cabinets, and countertops since they worked well for the family. The goal was to give each bathroom more personality with color and pattern. Here’s a look at the transformation of each of the five bathrooms in this multiple-bathroom remodel in Portland.

Primary Bathroom Remodel

The primary bathroom renovation transformed the once-beige space to reflect the homeowner’s bold design sense. In typical 2000s home fashion, the bathroom had a big built-in bathtub with a tile tub deck. We removed the large tub and replaced it with a sleek, freestanding bathtub to make the area feel more spacious. The existing vanity cabinet and mirror worked well for the couple. It got a fresh coat of paint using Tuscany (#1208) by Benjamin Moore, new granite countertops and upgraded plumbing fixtures. The rest of the bathroom got an instant style upgrade, mixing fashion-forward tiles and colors.

The shower was already a good size and had two showerheads. So, we incorporated a mix of tiles in the bathroom to add personality to the space. The decorative Ibla tile from Z Collection steals the show. The floral tile on the back wall of the shower mimics the tile behind the tub. A variety of shapes of Shibusa tiles from Arizona Tile were used, with hexagon on the main floor and 2×2 basketweave on the shower floor.

With the bulky tub deck removed, we added a ledge to the back wall of the tub area. There is a strip of the Normandy granite countertop on top of the ledge wall to tie in the vanity countertop.

Guest Bathroom Remodel

The upstairs guest bathroom got refreshed with painted cabinets, new tile floor, plumbing, mirror, lighting, and cabinet hardware. The existing cabinets were painted Downing Straw by Sherwin-Williams (SW 2183) to tie into the safari mural in the adjacent bedroom.

Jack and Jill Bathroom Remodel

The Jack and Jill bathroom received the most extensive remodel transformation. We first selected a graphic floor tile by Arizona Tile in the design process, and then the bathroom vanity color Artichoke by Sherwin-Williams (SW #6179) correlated to the tile. Our client proposed installing a stained tongue and groove behind the vanity. Now the gold decorative mirror pops off the textured wall.

Additionally, the tub and shower combination was upgraded to a walk-in tile shower instead of the dated fiberglass insert.

Main Level Bathroom Remodel

Also, the main level bathroom refresh included upgrading the plumbing, lighting, and cabinet hardware.

Basement Bathroom Remodel

Lastly, the goal of the basement bathroom remodel was to create a moody, art-deco feel. The walls and ceiling were painted in a dark Grizzle Gray by Sherwin-Williams (SW #7068) and the cabinet in Iron Ore (SW #7069). Updating to Brizo plumbing elevates the look. The patterned Bedrosians floor tile gives the room a punch.
