Step it up: Staircase Remodels

Staircase remodels can change the entire look of your home. Staircases are a focal point of the home and a transformation can shift your home from one decade to the next with some overdue upgrades to take it from a basic builder-grade home to a home that reflects your current style.

While a staircase project is a substantial investment in your home, the updated look makes a great impact. There are ways to utilize what is already there too. You can mix old and new by updating the balusters and keeping your existing handrail and freshening it up with paint or stain, or scrap the whole thing and start with a clean slate for a completely new design.

We often use products by L.J. Smith Stair Systems, a stair parts manufacturer. If you’re thinking about a change to your staircase, we recommend looking for inspiration on Houzz, in magazines, and at your friend’s and neighbors homes. Find out what style you gravitate towards – traditional, transitional or contemporary. What elements are important to you as you change the look in your home? Our Design and Construction team can help with all of the logistics of your staircase update, but the first place to start is to get inspired.

Here are a few staircase projects that Mountainwood Homes has completed recently:

This home was build in 1999 which doesn’t seem that long ago, but a lot can change in 16 years. A staircase update in Bethany helps to modernize the entire space.

The stairs provide a statement – a strong and transitional design that mimics the impressive updates made in the family’s kitchen remodel.

This SW Portland home took a contemporary turn with a staircase update. The after feature sleek, horizontal lines which are a nice change from the usual vertical ones.

Another home in Bethany got a major update with a staircase remodel. The 1987 home featured a wooden stringer, and painted balusters. The family moved in right after the remodel, and the stairs now set the tone for the rest of the updates planned for the home.

Paint-grade box newels with a flat cap and iron balusters with a knuckle add interest to the statement staircase right when you walk in the door. A stained railing adds contrast and incorporates the home’s newly stained hardwoods.

This Happy Valley home reflects a welcomed change to the front entry with a staircase remodel which ties in nicely to the kitchen remodel.
